Does Over-the-Counter Vein Therapy Work?

older woman smilingOver the years, you expect to see some changes to your appearance. You’re prepared for a few gray hairs, wrinkles, and even age spots; however, there are changes you didn’t expect. Varicose veins and spider veins are a common occurrence as the years’ pass. Although they are often attributed to age, they can also occur for other reasons as well, such as sitting for prolonged periods of time or pregnancy. No matter the cause, they may make you feel insecure about your looks. Thankfully, you’ve recently heard about different options for over-the-counter vein therapy, but are they effective?

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Your veins are responsible for delivering blood that’s no longer oxygenated back toward the heart. There are tiny valves within the veins that prevent the blood from going backward. Over time, the valves can weaken or suffer damage. As a result, blood will flow backward and pool in an area.

Typically, varicose veins appear on the legs because they have the greatest pressure when returning blood to the heart. They look like enlarged, raised veins that may twist. They can range in color from blue, red, or flesh-colored.

What are Over-the-Counter Treatments?

There are a variety of home remedies that claim to provide relief from varicose veins, such as using essential oils. They are derived from specific plants because of their therapeutic properties, such as reducing inflammation and improving circulation. A few of the top essential oils to help varicose veins include:

  • Lavender: Reduces pain.
  • Horse Chestnut: Reduces swelling, pain, and itchiness.
  • Sea Pine: Reduces swelling and edema.
  • Grape Vine: Reduces swelling.
  • Yarrow: Reduces symptoms of varicose veins when applied to the skin.

Treatment using essential oils is considered homeopathic. As a result, there have not been extensive studies performed to evaluate their effectiveness. If you don’t get the results you want using over-the-counter treatments, it may be time to look at other options.

How Can I Treat Varicose Veins?

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for spider and smaller varicose veins. A special solution is injected into the vein, which causes it to swell and restrict blood flow. This allows the vein to collapse and shrink. After the treatment, it’s normal to have slight bruising at the injection site. You may even see some localized discoloration, but it will subside. Over the next several weeks, your body naturally absorbs the vein to eliminate its appearance.

Say Good-Bye to Varicose Veins

Sclerotherapy is a safe and minimally effective solution to permanently erase varicose veins. If you’re ready to wear shorts again, it’s time to see if sclerotherapy is right for you.
